Every time I come back to New Orleans from Maine I get the bends.
Returning from that clear, northern clime where things
sparkle with that sort of spit and polish shine to the fetid fecundity
(could not resist)
of August in the deep south is shock to the
system. I've retreated indoors. Books, music, writing
and occasionally venturing forth after dark should see me
through until the end of the month.
