Perfection in Form

"In his studio, the highly artificial setting for virtually all his photographs,
Robert Mapplethorpe arranged the world for his viewfinder. "He'd look
at scene said Dimitri Levas, the photographer's friend and art director, "and
see what the essence of it was and try to figure out how to make it into a
perfect form. Another friend, Susan Sontag, explored a similar notion...
"What he looks for, which could be called form, is the quiddity or isness
of something.  Not the truth about something, but the strongest version of it."
