According to Mark Rothko, "what was Avery's repertoire ? His living room, Central Park, his wife Sally, his daughter March, the beaches and mountains where they summered, cows, fish heads, the flight of birds, his friends and whatever world strayed through his studio; a domestic, unheroic cast. So what do I think ? I think they are absolutely gorgeous in their boldness and simplicity of form. The colors are beautiful and the paintings have this feeling of ease and freshness about them. When I look at them, I relax and let down in some way. I feel like taking a deep breath.
